About John Perkins:
From his part Cherokee, coal miner father who taught him Native American combat wrestling and how to fight with a knife, tomahawk, stick and spear to his WW II veteran uncles who taught him close quarter combat tactics, John Perkins comes from a long line of combat warriors.
As a scrawny kid, John Perkins was trained to be a warrior from the age of 5. From his part Cherokee, coal miner father who taught him Native American combat wrestling and how to fight with a knife, tomahawk, stick and spear to his WW II veteran uncles who taught him close quarter combat tactics, John comes from a long line of combat warriors.
John's father and uncles were extremely powerful men. His father could punch a hole in a Philco refrigerator and his uncle Elbert could lift the front end of an eight cylinder Buick. And even as a young child, John couldn't get one disturbing problem out of his head?how can one train to defeat men who possess such fearsome physical strength?
And the quest began!
After traveling from dojo to dojo looking for a teacher who could fight under real-life conditions, Perkins came across Master Ik Jo Kang. Master Kang not only could fight but also had the ability to kick a hole in a brand new Everlast heavy bag. By the age of twenty-five Perkins had learned the combat aspects of Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido with Master Ik Jo Kang. He also studied handgun and knife training as taught to the Republic of Korea Army during the Vietnam era.
During this time Perkins was introduced by the Coordinator of the Degerburg Martial Arts Academy in Chicago to temple-trained Tai Chi Master, Waysun Liao. Master Liao demonstrated incredible ability using Tai Chi for combat. This profound experience reinforced Perkins' own findings on the use of internal vs. external (purely muscular) energy.
Perkins then went on to train with U.S. Marshall Thomas Loughnan, the fastest man in the world with a Colt 1911. Loughnan taught Perkins how to shoot under combat conditions before John entered the police academy at the age of eighteen; the beginning of his law enforcement career that would last twenty-two years.
As a young policeman in the early 1970's, John's beat included some of the worst neighborhoods in the New York metropolitan area where he routinely worked backup units responding to the most violent crimes "in progress?. John became quite familiar with violence. With over 700 arrests under his belt, at least 100 of them were brutally violent scenarios where people routinely ended up in the hospital or morgue.
But for John, this was another reason to continue to train and test his combative skills. While still a Police Officer, Perkins engaged in illegal pit-fighting on the docks of Newark and New Orleans as a test of his own ability after his father's death. These savage forerunners of today's No Holds Barred competitions truly had ?no rules?.
Under Dr. Peter Pizzola (current director of the NYPD Crime Lab), Perkins went on to work in the Yonkers , New York Crime Lab where he became an expert in blood-spatter pattern analysis. Perkins is recognized by Dr. Pizzola as an expert on the dynamics of violence.
But during all those years, the same disturbing problem he saw as a child was now being rammed home by the absolute forensic reality of all his personal and professional experiences. The problem was this:
If all REAL violence is chaos (and all his homicide analyses proved this), then WHY was all the formalized training available to cops, soldiers and civilians based on PATTERNED techniques? What's more, HOW could these choreographed responses even hope to adapt to morphing attacks from a stronger attacker?
Back in 1965, Perkins began experimenting with the concept of free associative fighting principles, combining Native American and Close Combat systems. In 1971 he began to create the rudiments of what would eventually become a new art by adding core combat aspects of Tai Chi and later, elements of the ancient Greek combat art of Eleftheri Pali (?ruthless combat?).
Finally in 1978, Perkins broke away from all classical systems and created Ki Chuan Do, ?the Way of the Spirit Fist? emphasizing the concept of sensing and controlling energy, rather than form. By abandoning all patterned technique training in favor of methods that promote spontaneity, creativity and adaptability, Perkins generated a tremendous amount of controversy among strict classicists but a lot of interest from security professionals.

In a deadly attack, how do you pick the "right" self-defense technique to save your life? You can't. No matter what your martial art style, techniques are not the answer. Real fights are NEVER choreographed...your SELF-DEFENSE shouldn't be either! http://attackproof.com
